PM_MCD64_21098 2021-04-08 2021-04-08 Note Year 2020 re-processed The MCD64A1 in C6 for year 2020 was accidentally re-processed by MODAPS. This re-processing should not have any impact on the product and the re-processed version should be exactly the same as the original product, in terms of actual science data, except for some minor differences in the metadata.

PM_MCD43_20143 2020-05-22 2020-05-22 Note Incorrect representation of aerosol quantities The incorrect representation of the aerosol quantities (low average high) in the C6 MYD09 and MOD09 surface reflectance products may have impacted down stream products (particularly over arid bright surfaces). This (and a few other issues) have been corrected for C6.1. Therefore users should avoid substantive use of the C6 MCD43 products and wait for the C6.1 products. In any event, users are always strongly encouraged to download and use the extensive QA data provided in MCD43A2, in addition to the briefer mandatory QAs provided as part of the MCD43A1, 3, and 4 products.

PM_MCD19_18163 2018-06-12 2018-06-12 Pending Snow Fraction values exceed valid range The C6 MCD19A1 product contains values in the Snow Fraction layer, which are occasionally observed to exceed the valid range of 0,10000. This issue has been noted and will be resolved in collection 6.1 of this data product. The image below shows an example of tile h15v01 from day 2018147 where the red color shows the Snow Fraction layer values over 10000.

PM_MCD64_18100 2018-04-10 2018-04-10 Pending Degraded performance prior to November 2000. C6 MCD64A1, the Burned Area product is not available for the mission prior to November 2000. The product has been verified to have degraded performance due to problem with the MODIS Terra thermal bands (21 and 22 used to detect fire) during this period.

PM_MCD18_18073 2018-03-14 2018-03-14 Pending MCD18A1/A2 overestimated at places of high moisture The Terra Aqua Combined Daily DSRPAR product (MCD18A1/A2) may have been overestimated at places of high moisture due to failure of the science process to read and process the MERRA2 water vapor product. Additionally, retrievals may have been biased resulting in error in the DSR/PAR increasing as a function of latitude with increased error at higher latitude. The product has been listed as Beta quality, meaning early release product, minimally validated with significant errors. Product is not appropriate as the basis for quantitative scientific publications.

NOTE: Improved and science quality version of the product will be generated in the upcoming C61 reprocessing expected to start in May/June 2018. This known issue will be updated with details of issues, solution and improvement to the product in C61 when the software update becomes available.

PM_MCD43_17243 2017-08-31 2017-09-26 Note Striping in NBAR QA due to band 6 detectors in Aqua Striping is observed in the C6 BRDF-Albedo product MCD43A1, MCD43A3 due to nearly 60% dead or noisy detectors in Aqua band 6. Striping in NBAR QA datasets is observed and expected, usually over low latitude regions with limited observations. The BRDF Albedo is likely to select Terra over Aqua for B6, showing a slight striping. Below is an example of MCD43A1 over Central America, where striping is observed in the BRDF Albedo NIR parameter. The second image is the same tile and parameter with the code fix for the band 6 issue, which resolves the striping.

*CLOSED: A code change was delivered by the science team to fix the band 6 issue for use in the forward processing only. The changes affects two broadbands NIR and shortwave that use band6 in MCD43A1 and MCD43A3.

PM_MCD64_17034 2017-02-03 2017-02-03 Note Invalid value for metadata QAPERCENTMISSINGDATA in MCD64A1, tile h01v08, year 2005 C6 MCD64A1, the Burned Area product files for tile h01v08, year 2005 reports an invalid value of 2147483648 for the metadata QSAPERCENTMISSINGDATA. The source of this has been traced to a combination of coding error while computing the percentage and also error in the tiled ancillary input product MCD12Q1, the annual landcover product. The annual land product for tile h01v08 incorrectly reports zero land pixels for year 2005 only. Since the BA process is run for tiles with at least one land pixel in the tile the process doesn't check for division by zero while computing the Percentages.

PM_MCD43_16271 2016-09-27 2016-09-27 Note Incorrect RANGE ENDING DATE reported The C6 BRDF-Albedo Model Parameters data product reports the incorrect 'RANGEENDINGDATE' in the metadata. The science product quality is not affected as the PGE is operating as expected, considering only the data input from the 16-day period.

In the example below the input files and beginning / end date range are listed for C6 MCD43A1.A2016182.h12v04.006.2016205024154.hdf
The input pointers show a start date of 06.22.16(2016.174) and an end date of 07.07.16(2016.189). PM_MCD43_15321 2015-11-17 2015-11-17 Pending MCD43A2 QA initialization discrepancy QA datasets in the C6 BRDF-Albedo quality data product MCD43A2 may be incorrect, though all of the science data sets are produced correctly in the BRDF parameter product MCD43A1, the Albedo product MCD43A3 and the NBAR product MCD43A4. The source of this error in the QA dataset has been traced to incorrect initialization of the QA datasets from coding error in the processing algorithm. Users are advised to exercise caution while using the product in their applications.
A software patch with the needed bug fix is currently under testing at MODAPS. The following example shows images of QA dataset BRDF_Albedo_ValidObs_Band1 before and after the fix.
PM_MCD43_19213 2019-08-01 2019-08-16 Closed Production Error 2008 (289, 310, 311, 314) A data gap has been observed in the MCD43C1, C3 and C4 product in 2008 for days 289, 310, 311, and 314. The gap has been confirmed as the result of a production error from missing tiled input products to the CMG process. The solution is for the product to be reprocessed and replaced. Below is an example image of the corrupt data file for MCD43C1.A2008311 (11.06.108). This note will be updated when the issue has been fixed.

NOTE: 08.16.19 - The data for these dates have been reprocessed and the data issues have been resolved in the C6 archive.
PM_MCD12_19164 2019-06-13 2019-07-31 Closed Incorrect water mapped in 2017 MCD12 The C6 land cover product MCD12Q1, includes areas incorrectly mapped as water in year 2017, when compared to previous years. This occurs in North, Central and South America and to some degree in other continents. The images below show the Land Cover Type 2 and 1 classification for C6 2016 and 2017 for spatial subsets of two northern tiles. In each example of the different land classifications, the 2017 classification incorrectly shows more inland water than in year 2016. This issues only impacts year 2017 and was found to be caused by the staging of an incorrect number of inputs for MCD12Q1. The solution to fix this issue is currently being tested and the revised product should be available soon.

***** UPDATE: 07.31.19 ******: The product has been fixed and regenerated for year 2017.

PM_MCD12_19074 2019-03-15 2019-03-15 Pending Incorrect MCD12 Land Cover Type 2 class 14 definitions The Majority Land Cover Type 2 dataset (UMD Land Cover Class Scheme) in the operational C6 land cover products MCD12Q1 and MCD12C1, include natural vegetation/agriculture mosaic (class value 14) which is not supposed to be in the UMD scheme and was included by mistake. This issue will be fixed in the upcoming C61 reprocessing. Most of class 14 pixels will be re-mapped to class 9 or the Savannas class as they actually represent mixtures of trees and cultivation. Users are advised to approach the science team for guidance on how to deal with this for now until release of a Version 6.1 sometime later this year. The images below show the current C6 MCD12C1 SDS and the UMD land cover product user guide class definitions. Both cases incorrectly report class 14. This issue will be resolved in C61.

PM_MCD43_18304 2018-11-09 2018-11-09 Note Discrepancies in BRDF observed in 2012 leap second reprocessing On July 1st 2012, a routine leap second was added to the first granule of the day for C6 Aqua. During this adjustment it was discovered that the process introduced an error, which inadvertently shifted the time by one second following the leap second addition. A geolocation fix was implemented that corrected the leap second adjustment error and all L2 and L3 n-day data for this data day has been re-processed. However, reprocessing of the BRDF from this period to address the leap second issue on day 2012183 used the revised PGE versions, which were put into operation in the forward processing in 2017. Therefore some temporal discontinuity in BRDF for combined BRDF products, which include this data day (MCD43A1/MCD43A3) is expected. The example images below are global browse images of the MCD43A3 from both current and prior PGE versions, which shows some slight discrepancies in across the globe. The spatial subset of the global browse image highlight the discrepancies over central Africa.

PM_MCD64_18263 2018-09-20 2018-11-08 Note Incorrectly relabeled edges of 26 burned grid cells The C6 PGE134/ MCD64A1 (Burned Area product) contains a bug in the production software, which causes the burned grid cells in columns 0 and/or 2399 (left-most and right-most columns) of 26 specific MODIS land tiles to be incorrectly relabeled as unburned. This small impact is due to the way the internally used discrete sinusoidal kernel varies over the globe. The problem will be corrected in the forward processing of C6 with the PGE134 patch v6.0.8 (SCF v4.0.1) and will be resolved over the entire mission period with the start of C6.1 processing. The first image below shows an example of the incorrectly relabeled edges of the burned grid cells.

The 26 land tiles affected by this bug:

h07v07, h08v07, h09v04, h11v02, h11v06
h11v11, h12v11, h13v12, h16v02, h19v02
h20v04, h20v13, h21v05, h22v05, h23v06
h23v11, h24v02, h24v06, h26v04, h27v07
h28v07, h29v07, h29v10, h30v07, h30v10
h30v12.

******NOTE:****** A software patch, which fixes this issue, has been put into the C6 forward processing. The mission period will be reprocessed with the patched version of the software in C61 reprocessing only.

PM_MCD12_18263 2018-09-20 2019-03-15 Closed Incorrect MCD12C1 Land Cover Type 2 class definitions in metadata A discrepancy was identified in the classification legend for C6 MCD12C1 Land_Cover_Type2 (UMD) between what is shown as part of the actual science data set (SDS) and what is shown in the user guide. The SDS legend misses two class labels of 11 (Permanent Wetlands) and 14 (Cropland/Natural Vegetation Mosaics) while it misidentifies one class: 15 (Non-Vegetated Lands) as class 16. In all cases, the legend shown in the user guide is correct and matches the actual range of values given in the SDS. The incorrect land cover definitions for this class as obtained from the C6 SDS metadata attributes, and the correct class definitions from the user guide are provided below for reference.
PM_MCD12_18257 2018-09-14 2018-10-09 Note MCD12Q1 year 2017 quality issues MCD12Q1, the Land Cover product for year 2017 was accidentally released to public while it is still being reviewed for quality issues. The current version of the product is not approved for public release. Users in possession of the data are advised to discard the data. Science quality version of the data is currently under processing and is expected to be available soon.

****NOTE**** The correct product has been produced and verified by the science team and has been released to public through LP-DAAC and LAADS.

PM_MCD19_18166 2018-06-15 2018-06-15 Note Incorrect LONGNAME in MCD19A1 The C6 MCD19A1 product contains an incorrect LONGNAME. The MCD19A1 long name is reported as (MODIS/Terra+Aqua Land Surface BRF Daily L2G Global 500m, 1km and 10km SIN Grid). This is incorrect as there is no 10km resolution dataset. The correct LONGNAME should be (MODIS/Terra+Aqua Land Surface BRF Daily L2G Global 500m and 1km SIN Grid). This metadata discrepancy will be corrected in the C6.1 version.
