MODIS Switch to NISE AMSR2 Input

Effective August 6, 2025 (Day 218), operational MODIS data processing implemented a transition in the PGEs to begin using the NISE AMSR2 (NISE_A2) dataset in place of the legacy NISE input. This change was made in preparation for the planned decommissioning of the original NISE data source. Prior to the switch, NISE_A2 was thoroughly evaluated for data quality and continuity to ensure minimal impact on MODIS Level-2 products. The evaluation, conducted by the LDOPE team, found only minor differences in the MODIS Cloud Mask products (MOD35_L2 and MYD35_L2), primarily in high-latitude regions with persistent snow and ice cover. No downstream effects were observed in products that do not directly ingest the MxD35_L2 cloud mask.

The comparison graphics below illustrate the classification differences between operational C61 and NISE_A2 data for a representative day in the winter season. The complete evaluation report is available here: LDOPE NISE_A2 Evaluation
