Case #:AS_MYD_22091  Opening date: 04/01/2022  Last update: 04/19/2022|
On 03/31/22 at 090/17:59:08z, the power controller (PC) of the Aqua spacecraft swapped to the redundant B side, resulting in Aqua transitioning to Safe State. As a result, MODIS is in the expected safe mode configuration with all doors closed and the scan mirror not rotating. CP and FP are on. No science data is being produced while the S/C is in Safe State. The cause of the anomaly is under investigation, but it is suspected that increased solar flare activity may have triggered the anomaly as the transition to Safe Mode occurred over the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA). The exact timeline of the recovery plan will be posted when available. Additional images are available in the NRT note.
Aqua Safe Mode Anomaly: UPDATE 04.05.22********************
Aqua Safe Mode Anomaly: UPDATE 04.13.22********************
The status of PC-A was investigated on April 7, 2022 (097) and was deemed to be healthy. This led to the decision to switch back to PC-A, which has been used throughout the mission. This switch to PC-A has been done as of 04/13/2022 06:23z and the S/C is out of safe mode, though the MODIS instrument continues to be in safe mode. The instrument may come back to science mode by the evening of 04/14/2022 and science data acquisition may resume by late 04/14/2022, however that data will not be usable until all onboard gain states are restored and both the blackbody and the CFPA cool down to nominal levels. More details will be provided with an update provided by MCST and IOT in the coming days however fully nominal science data is not expected to start coming in util the week of 04/18/2022.
Aqua Safe Mode Anomaly: UPDATE 04.15.22********************
Aqua FOT has led the recovery of the S/C from safe mode to science mode and MODIS IOT has commanded the instrument into science mode as well. The estimated beginning time of the science data collect is 105/00:38, however, all data collected during DOY 105 will be in night rate. The instrument and focal plane temperatures will recover over the next 36 to 48 hours before a return to nominal operations. Over the next several days, MCST will perform an intensive evaluation of the instrument's health and performance and the assessment will be shared in the near future.
Aqua Safe Mode Anomaly: UPDATE 04.18.22********************
Aqua MODIS was transitioned back to Science Mode on Thursday, April 14th, at which time the BB heater was turned on and the CFPAs began cooling towards their temperature set points. The FPA temperatures have stabilized as of 2022/107 03:00 (April 17) and nominal data acquisition has begun since April 17. Both NRT and standard products are being generated at MODAPS and data products exported to the DAACs. This note will recieve a final update once it has been confirmed that the produced products meet standards else they may be re-processed.
Occurrence: AQUA C6 and C61 L1 and all downstream products for affected times.
