This web page contains global browse images of selected NPP VIIRS products to enable synoptic quality assessment of VIIRS Land products via the internet. These browse images are generated from the coarse 6km version of the products made at Land PEATE by resampling the full resolution data products generated at IDPS (operational xDRs/IPs) and at Land PEATE (Land PEATE Adjusted versions of xDRs/IPs/DDRs). The coarse spatial resolution products are projected into a global coordinate system defined with pixel sizes corresponding to 20km in the Hammer-Aitoff projection. These global browse images are generated with fixed contrast stretching and color look-up tables to enable consistent temporal comparison. This web interface has been developed to support interactive selection of browse products and zooming at 6km resolution.
VIIRS instrument was turned on 11/10/2011 (2011314) with the nadir door closed. Nadir door was opened at 16:00 GMT on 11/21/2011 (2011325). The global browse images of products for the period from day 2011314 until the opening of the nadir door on day 2011325 are made from the data products generated using the VIIRS data from back of the door. For this period (2011314 - 2011324) the browse contained weak noisy signals in SDR and correspondingly in the downstream products. The L1B browse images are generated by stretching the TOA reflectance in the range 0 - 0.00024417145 for the visible bands.
The browse images of products from day 2011325 (after 16:00 GMT) and onwards are from the earth view data. However, since the thermal bands were very noisy until they are cooled down on 2012020 after opening of the cooler door on 2012018, the browse images of products that use thermal bands contained significant noise and striping. For example, the cloud mask and all of the products that depend on the cloud mask such as surface reflectance, land surface temperature, vegetation index, snow and sea_ice etc for the period 2011325-2012020 contain significant noise and striping from the period.
Please note that the products are currently BETA quality and are not intended for scientific use. For more information on product quality and product quality issues please see the product quality documentation and also product known issues web pages. VIIRS calibration is based on prelaunch data and on-orbit calibration and characterization has begun. Currently, data from the visible, near infrared (NIR), and day-night (D/N) bands are beta quality. The higher order products will not be useable in the near future because they are in early stages of development and evaluation.
Note: The global browse images available on this web site should not be used for scientific analyses. The Land Cloud Mask (VNP35_L2) and Land Aerosol (VNP04_L2) are generated using the Mx8 version of the IDPS algorithms with NASA science team recommended changes, exclusively for use as input in generation of the NASA VIIRS Land records at Land SIPS. These products may have differences compared to similar records generated at IDPS or other SIPS and should not be considered as equivalent products.
Note: For browse images of L1B from processing of J1 VIIRS click here. The VIIRS instrument on-board J1 was activated on 11/28/2017. Browse images are available for days starting 12/13/2017, the day nadir door was opened. Please note that the instrument is undergoing calibration testing and L1B data is not expected to be of science quality. J1 forward global browses J1 NRT browses
